Cleaning restores a good duct. Some ducts were never good. A share of the vent runs in this area's housing stock — especially remodel-era retrofits — are crushed behind drywall, pieced together from taped scraps, run in ribbed foil that code no longer allows for concealed use, or simply routed so badly that no amount of cleaning keeps them flowing. Those need repair, and we handle both jobs in one visit when that is what the inspection finds.
What fails, and how it gets fixed
Crushed or kinked sections. A duct flattened during a past remodel or by settling framing throttles airflow permanently. Fix: replace the section with smooth-wall rigid metal, properly supported.
Separated joints. Duct sections pull apart inside walls and floors, quietly blowing hot, lint-loaded air into the cavity — a moisture problem and, per the U.S. Fire Administration's Topical Fire Report Series, exactly the kind of failure a cleaning schedule alone cannot fix (the agency counts an estimated 2,900 home clothes dryer fires a year, with failure to clean or maintain the vent as the leading contributing factor). Fix: reconnect, seal with foil tape (never screws, which snag lint), and secure.
Foil and fabric duct. Common in mid-century installs and cheap flips. The concealed run gets replaced with 4-inch smooth-wall metal; the short visible transition behind the dryer can stay semi-rigid.
Bad terminations. Hoods with fine screens (a lint trap and, for dryers, a code violation), flaps painted shut, or terminations into a soffit, attic, or crawl space — which building code flatly prohibits. Fix: a proper dryer-rated hood, relocated if the original spot was wrong.
Roof vs. sidewall terminations. A roof termination that keeps failing — a hood that blows loose, flashing that leaks, ice damming around the boot — sometimes gets rerouted to a sidewall exit instead, where the framing allows it; sidewall replacements are also simply faster and cheaper to reach. Where a roof exit is the only option, the fix is a proper roof-rated hood and correctly resealed flashing, not a patch. Over-length runs. Ducts stretched well past what the dryer's own fan can push air through — see the code section below for what "too long" actually means. Where rerouting cannot shorten the path, a listed booster fan keeps a long run legal and functional.
What the code actually requires
Dryer exhaust ducts are governed by Section M1502 of the International Residential Code (IRC) for one- and two-family homes, and by the parallel Section 504 of the International Mechanical Code (IMC) for larger buildings — the same body of model code, adopted village by village with its own edition and amendments. A few core requirements are consistent across recent editions: the concealed run must be smooth-wall rigid metal, at least 0.0157 inch thick — flexible foil and vinyl duct are not permitted there, only for the short transition hose behind the dryer, which itself cannot exceed 8 feet and cannot be concealed inside a wall or floor — see foil, semi-rigid, or smooth metal for what each material is actually rated to do. Total duct length is capped — in the 2021 edition, at 35 feet from the dryer connection to the outdoor termination — and that maximum is reduced for every elbow in the run; the 2021 edition's own table lists a 2.5-foot deduction for each 4-inch 45-degree elbow and a 5-foot deduction for each 4-inch 90-degree elbow.

Repair or replace: how to decide
This is the genuinely useful question, and it depends on how much of the run is actually compromised versus how much is isolated damage in an otherwise sound duct.
Repair usually makes sense when the duct is mostly rigid metal and mostly sound, with one isolated failure — a single separated joint, one crushed section from a remodel, a termination hood that failed. Fixing that one point costs less than tearing out a working duct.
Replacement usually makes sense when the run is foil or vinyl for most or all of its length, has multiple separate failure points, or the routing itself is the problem — too many elbows, too long to fix with a booster fan, or buried somewhere no future repair could reach without opening the wall again. Patching a duct that is wrong in its fundamentals costs money now and again later; replacing it once, correctly, is usually the cheaper path over time.

Can flexible foil duct be replaced without opening the walls?
Usually only where the foil sits somewhere reachable without demolition — a basement joist bay with removable panels, an open crawl space, or the short visible run behind the dryer. Foil buried inside finished walls or a floor cavity generally requires opening drywall or flooring to reach it, because it has to come out in full and be replaced with rigid metal duct end to end, not patched in place. The inspection tells you which situation you are in before anyone writes a quote.
What is a dryer vent booster fan, and do I actually need one?
A booster fan is a code-listed inline blower installed partway along a duct run that is too long to move air on its own, adding the airflow the dryer's own fan cannot supply over distance. It is a genuine fix for a run that cannot be shortened or rerouted — not a workaround for a duct that is simply dirty or crushed. If a shorter path exists, rerouting is usually the better and cheaper fix; a booster fan earns its cost specifically when the layout of the house leaves no shorter option.
Does replacing a roof termination cost more than a sidewall one?
Generally yes. A roof termination means ladder work, roofing-safe flashing and resealing around the new hood, and more time on site, all of which push a repair toward the higher end of the range. A sidewall termination near grade is faster and cheaper to reach and replace. If your home has a roof termination that keeps failing, ask us whether rerouting to a sidewall exit is possible — it is not always, but where it is, it can cost less over time than repeated roof repairs.
Is dryer vent repair the landlord's responsibility, or mine?
For rentals, dryer vent condition generally falls under the landlord's maintenance obligations the same as any other exhaust or mechanical system, though the specifics depend on the lease. For condos, it depends on the association's declaration: the portion of duct inside your unit is often the owner's responsibility, while a shared chase or vertical run serving multiple units is often a common element the association maintains — but that split is not universal, and declarations vary. Check your lease or declaration, or ask the association directly, before assuming who pays.
Can I repair a damaged dryer vent myself?
Some of it, cautiously. Reseating a loose transition hose or replacing an exterior hood you can reach from a ladder is within range for a comfortable DIYer, using code-listed parts. Opening a wall or floor to replace a concealed section, rerouting a path, or working at a second-story or roof termination is not — it requires matching code-compliant materials, sealing methods that will not just trap lint again, and, for roof work, fall protection most homeowners do not have on hand. If the inspection shows the problem is concealed, that is the point where calling us in is worth it.
